Highlights of Transylvania: castles, villages, old cities – 6 days

The plan: Enjoy a tour in the beautiful and charming Transylvania! Discover splendid castles, old fortified churches, SF salt mines, quaint villages in the middle of nowhere! Don’t forget to try the local food and drink the plum brandy!

Departure point: Sibiu.
End point: Bucharest
Recommended for: small groups, families
Transportation: by car/minivan, depending on the group size

DETAILED PROGRAM:

Day 1: Sibiu – Sibiu city tour – Alba Iulia fortress – Sibiel

Enjoy a city tour in Sibiu. You will visit the main highlights: The Big Square, The Lesser Square, The bridge of lies, Huet Square. Later, you will be transfered to Alba Iulia, to visit the impressive fortress built by the Habsburg Empire.

In the late afternoon we will visit Sibiel village and enjoy a ride with the horse and cart, on the rolling hills.

Day 2: Sibiel – Rametea village – Turda salt mine – Cluj Napoca 

First stop for today is the beautiful Rametea, a hungarian village, very beautiful, which looks like a museum in open space.

We will continue the day with a visit at Turda salt mine, which looks absolutely..stunning!

A visit in Transylvania is not complete without Cluj. Cluj is one of the most developed cities of Romania, with a beautiful and old architecture. It is also home for many festivals, like UNTOLD, and a university center.

Day 3: Cluj Napoca –  Sighisoara 

Today you will be transfered to Sighisoara, a small but beautiful town in the heart of Transylvania. Sighisoara has the best preserved old center, part of the UNESCO heritage.

Enjoy a city tour in Sighisoara, with highlights like the Clock Tower, The Dominican Church, The covered staircase.

Day 4: Sighisoara – Viscri (visit the old fortified church, local craftsmen, ride with the horse and cart) – Brasov

This beautiful day starts with a visit in Viscri village (where Prince Charles bought land and houses) where you will admire the typical saxon houses and you will visit the old fortified church from the XII ve century.

We will also visit some local craftsmen and enjoy lunch at Eugene’s (probably the best food and plum brandy in the village).

Transfer to Brasov in the late afternoon.

Day 5: Brasov – Bran Castle – Peles Castle – Bucharest

The Transylvania tour would not be complete without a visit at Vlad’s castle. Feared by many but also admired, Vlad the Impaler and Dracula have a few things in common. Things you will learn when you visit the Bran Castle.

Next stop is Peles Castle, a splendid former residence commissioned by King Carol the I st, the first king of Romania (1866 – 1914). In the evening you will arrive in Bucharest.

Day 6: Bucharest city tour (half a day)

Enjoy a city tour in Bucharest. Highlights include: The Palace of the Parliament, Cotroceni Museum, The village museum, Victoria Boulevard. Drop off at your hotel in the evening. 

End of program.
