10 best places to setup camp

Camping in Romania in 2023: A practical guide

Romania is of the last countries in Europe where camping is still largely unregulated. This means that even though it may be lacking in infrastructure, it more than makes up for it in complete freedom to setup camp wherever you like.  We break down some of our favorite places.

Camping in Romania: High up the mountains

Ciucaș Mountains. Easy reach from Brașov (30min) or Bucharest (2h), they are impressive while easy to navigate. There are probably hundreds of small meadows where you can setup and endless fields of blueberries to keep you fed 😉

Transalpina. The highest altitude road in Romania. 148 kilometers with more than 20km at over 2000 meters. Just pick a place to park your car and start walking until you find a spot that speaks to you.  https://www.instagram.com/p/CfemQ87t27N/

Transfăgărășan. This keeps making it on all of our lists and for good reason. The Făgăraș Mountains are the most spectacular in Romania and this is the gateway into them.

Retezat Mountains. One of the ranges that are most popular with campers. With 20 peaks over 2000 meters and over 80 glacial lakes you can pick and choose where to setup.

Camping in Romania: Middle ground

Măcin Mountains. Oldest mountains in Romania with low altitudes and fair climate. Turtle paradise with an explosive array of flora and fauna.

Scărișoara Cave in Apuseni Mountains. An ancient cave, the largest undergound glacier in Romania and a glacier lake. All nested in the middle of a fairytale forest, close to a village where you can easily restock on supplies.

Muddy Volcanoes. A natural wonder not to miss and a great opportunity to spend a night under the stars. There is no camping in the National Park (that would also be very uncomfortable with the constant gas release by the volacanoes) but plenty of options nearby,

Camping in Romania: The Danube & The Black Sea

Corbu Beach. Pristine and mostly deserted, one of the few wild nature places still left on an otherwise overdeveloped Black Sea Coast. No electricity and no camping utilities means you’ll only meet other avid campers like yourself.

Sulina, Danube Delta. The Danube Delta is an incredible area unique in Europe. Mosquitoes and humidity can make camping a bit uncomfortable so even though we absolutely recommend going, we also suggest you keep it short 😉.

Danube Boilers. Where the Danube enters Romania, setup camp on one of the walls overlooking the spectacular gorge.
