Retezat Mountain’s smaller but equally spectacular brother
So close and always in the shadow of its bigger brother, the Retezatul Mic (Small Retezat) area is equally beautiful and full of things to do. It is however sadly less developed in terms of marked trails and detailed maps – so if you want to explore on your own, either don’t 😊 or make sure you are overly prepared. Or, take one of our guided tours.
Hike up to Piatra Iorgovanului
The ranges’ highest peak also offers the most spectacular 360 degree panoramic view of all the surrounding mountains. The trail starting point is right next to the road so it is easy to leave the car there or even arrive late and camp under the stars to make sure you get an early start.
Highlights include the endangered edelweiss flower and the ever-elusive black goats, best climbers on the mountain. Another notable mention clearly visible from the peak is the spectacular Oslea face, home of the annual Red Bull Hike & Ride competition.
Glamping
The glamping scene has seen an incredible surge during the last 10 years with new projects popping all over. Resorts that also feature jacuzzi and little spas, fire pits and other such 5 star hotel amenities. The tents themselves offer all the comfort one needs, the big difference is not in the facilities but in the view and nature the resort offers. The more spectacular the better 😊
Piule Pleasa
The road to this beautiful ridge is spectacular in itself and has a little bit of everything. It starts off with Scorota Gorge, no more than 3 meters wide and abundant in vegetation, it almost reminds you of the wild jungles in Indiana Jones. We soon enter the woods part of the trail and then, about one hour later we get to the open mountain plain and the Scorota Shepherd’s House. From then on we push to the ridge and then it’s just views and almost flat wide trails that will be a welcomed respite after the climb.
