A good equipment contributes to the success of a hike, along with the sights, weather, and of course, the people you meet along the journey.
The required equipment for a hike in the mountains, in Romania, is:
- backpack (a light one, like 20 l, for a day trip; a 40 l for a 2 day trip; a 50 l plus, for a multi day tour)
- good hiking boots, with VIBRAM sole and Gore Tex membrane if possible (other membrane would do as well); boots with a very good grip basically
- good mountain pants, waterproof. For winter time you need special winter pants and also thermals
- fleece, wind stopper
- good mountain socks; the ones made from wool are very good during the cold nights
- waterproof and windproof jacket. On the top of the mountain it could get chilly and windy
- something to cover your head (even in the summer, temperatures could drop down quickly)
- sun block and sun glasses
- gloves (even in the summertime, if you go to high mountains above 2000 m, gloves are a must have)
- hiking sticks (they help a lot, especially if you have bad knees)
