If you want to do hiking in Romania, Fagaras Mountains must be on your list. Fagaras are also called the Transylvanian Alps.
Why Transylvanian Alps?
Fagaras Mountains are located in Transylvania. They offer some of the most spectacular landscapes in the mountains of Romania. With peaks over 2000 m, and many beautiful glacial lakes, they guard the land of Transylvania.
In winter time, when they are covered in snow, they look just like the Alps. You can do skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, in Fagaras in winter.
The highest peaks in Fagaras
The highest peaks, in order, are: Moldoveanu (2544 m), Negoiu (2535 m), Vistea (2527).
Can you get to Moldoveanu in one day?
Yes you can. You can start your ascent to Moldoveanu from Balea Lake (2200 m), from Podragu Hut or Sambata. When you hike up to Moldoveanu keep in mind it will be a very long day.
You have to start early in the morning, and travel light. Here is a list of required equipment for the hike:
- light backpack
- good hiking boots
- hiking sticks
- fleece
- t-shirts (breathable)
- good mountain jacket
- something to cover your head
- sun block
- snacks
- water
- basic medical kit

Hi, it is winter in Fagaras mountains and it will be until late May. To climb Moldoveanu now means you have to be prepared for winter conditions and to have the right equipment.
You could do other tours in other areas. Are you looking for a guided tour? Pleasr send an email on office@outdooractivities.ro and we will see what we can arrange. Best, Dan
